Have you ever felt like you can’t keep up with the ever-changing educational standards, scope and sequences, and curriculum maps? Elementary teachers have a lot on their plates! They often have seven or more preps a day. Within each of the preps, comes differentiation. These teachers prepare interventions, on-level work, and enrichment. That triples their traditional lesson plans of the past. When elementary teachers get bogged down with so many subjects and meeting the needs of so many student levels, they sometimes get no sympathy from administrators and often hear the phrase, “Work smarter, not harder!” When you’re constantly told to do more, do more, …. what can you possibly eliminate? One teacher can’t do it all!

I’m here to tell you that SymbalooEdu is your ‘map’ to working smarter!

Below is a tutorial, with step-by-step directions on how to ‘Mapaloo’……mapping with Symbaloo.

Teacher Resources

1. Get your team on board! Notify other teachers that teach your subject area or grade level and ask them to commit by joining your efforts.

2. Start by taking a look at your curriculum map. Are you teaching by units, months, or quarters?

3. Assuming you already have a SymbalooEdu account, create a new webmix and name it. We named ours Quarter 1 Unit 1 Teacher. This webmix provides a platform for storing all your resources that you’ll need when teaching Quarter 1 Unit 1 material. Now you’re ready to create links to standards-based material. We made tiles for some of the following resources:

  • Links to the publishing company’s websites and activities.
  • Links to any Promethean/Smart Board lessons.
  • Links to audio or video clips.
  • Links to teacher made worksheets, homework, or tests. (These include .pdf files, google docs, etc.)
  • Links to PowerPoint presentations.
  • Links to websites that might provide great teaching ideas for the topics we’re studying.

This webmix may start small in scale, but will soon grow into a wealth of great resources. When you or a team member create an activity or find something relevant, you will create a tile on the webmix and it will be readily available for your peers to use. SymbalooEdu makes following a curriculum map very manageable!

You will no longer spend hours locating your materials. It will all be at your fingertips from any computer, tablet, or mobile device.

3. Repeat the steps above for each unit on your curriculum map. This doesn’t need to be prepared all at once. You can work at this one unit, month, or quarter at a time. After the year ends, you’ll have all your resources ready to go for the next year!

Don’t stop with just the teacher webmixes! Produce webmixes for your students, as well.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Student Resources

1. Create a new webmix and give it a name. We named our first student webmix Quarter 1 Unit 1 Student.

2. Request each of your team members to find 5-10 free, online games to link to this webmix. We used the standards on our curriculum map to determine the types of activities that would be both educational and age appropriate.

3. Repeat the steps above for each unit on your curriculum map. As I stated with your teacher webmixes, the student webmixes don’t need to be completed all at once. You can work at this one unit, month, or quarter at a time. After the year ends, you’ll have all your student resources ready to go for the next year!

If the order of your curriculum map ever changes, you can easily move tiles from one webmix to another to accommodate any modifications.

Students, parents, and administrators love this concept. What better way to engage your students in learning, by providing them with opportunities to reinforce the standards you are teaching for each quarter on your curriculum map! Students have access to these activities at school and home, as well as on any mobile device.
